to scratch (with a sharp object such as the point of a knife or the fingernail), to score, engrave (2) mild imperative or hortative marker placed at the beginning of a phrase; it is used only to inferiors and may often be translated by “please” or “will you please”. សូម is a more polite synonym
Eg. ចូរនិយាយខ្មែរ! : Speak Khmer! -

to request, ask for; to beg, entreat; polite term used to introduce a sentence. It means 'please, would you..., would you please'
Eg. សូមជំរាបមកលោកឳពុកនិងអ្នកម្តាយសូមជ្រាប : Dear father and mother (fairly formal greeting in a letter). -
សុំ
( initverb ) [som] - detail »
to ask to (do something) (may be used in a polite way by older people to younger ones. It is often used interchangeably with សូម which however more accurately occurs in sentence initial position)
Eg. រាជការសុំឲ្យអស់បណ្ដារាស្ត្រយកចិត្តទុកដាក់ខំប្រឹងធ្វើការនេះឲ្យបានសំរេចឆាប់ : The government asks all the people to work hard. -
